Many of you might remember that The Monastic Home began as only candles under the name East York Street (the street where my grandparents lived). Much to my surprise, the business has evolved to include a bake shop. I often wonder about how these two worlds go together, candles and baked goods. At the end of the day, my hope is that both bring comfort and light. The bake shop is only open Saturday mornings, so it forces a sense of ritual—which I think strengthens the feeling of community. Whether a shop regular or someone new walks in the door, we know that we only have this day together until next week. So we must be fully present to it and savor it for the fleeting Saturday morning gift that it is. In designing the look and feel of the space, I wanted it to truly feel like home. May this candle smell like everything good, warm and comforting that is distinct to the feeling that home can bring.
